Sony Cybershot DSC HX1 Review

The Sony Cybershot DSC HX1 is one of the most advanced compact digital cameras you are likely to find. One of the key differences between the Cybershot DSC HX1 and the vast majority of compact digital camera is that Sony use a different type of sensor. This may not mean a lot to you, but it allows for some significant differences in the way the camera works.
The sensor type is CMOS rather than CCD. CMOS sensors are more commonly found in Digital SLRs. The biggest advantage they have is that they allow for much faster processing. This means that you can fire off very fast bursts of photos. The Cybershot DSC HX1 is capable of shooting at up to 10 frames per second in full resolution. The majority of compact digital camera that can come anywhere near to matching this capability can only do so if the number of megapixels you shoot out is decreased significantly, usually to 3 megapixels. Being able to fire off fast bursts of photos is a great advantage if you shoot fast moving subjects such as sports or wildlife. This makes it far more likely that you will be able to capture the perfect photo.
Aside from these new features the Cybershot DSC HX1 offers plenty of other options. The camera truly offers a great degree of flexibility. To start with there is a 20x optical zoom lens. As well as the obviously telephoto qualities the lens has a minimum focal length of 28mm. This gives it wide angle capabilities. This can give an edge to scenic photos, groups of people and wide buildings. A further option comes if you decrease the number of megapixels you shoot at. This frees up more zoom, up to a total of 108x at VGA resolution. As you would expect with a lens of this length Sony has equipped the camera with image stabilisation.
Next up in terms of features is the ability to shoot High Definition movie clips. This feature is being rolled out to more and more digital cameras. Although my feeling is that it does not replace a camcorder, it does give you a useful back up if you are out and about and you do not have a camcorder handy. Stereo sound can also be recorded. Zoom is also available while recording is in progress.
Another feature worth a mention is the LCD screen. To start with it is a large size at 3 inches. The screen can also be titled by up to 90 degrees. This can help if you find yourself at an awkward shooting angle. You also have the option of using an electronic viewfinder to compose your photos through. You also have access to manual exposure modes including aperture priority and shutter priority.
The Cybershot DSC HX1 can also capture sweeping panoramas. This feature allows you to shoot letterbox style photos. In wide mode the ratio is 40:9 and in ultra wide mode the ratio is 60:9. On most digital cameras the widest ratio available is the same as a widescreen television set at 16:9. This innovation is also available thanks to the ability of the Cybershot DSC HX1 to fire off rapid bursts. This mode works by you sweeping the camera round. While you are doing this the camera takes a burst of photos and then stitches them together automatically. Sony claim the process is complete within 3 seconds.
As you would expect picture quality is very good indeed and goes along way to completing the package.
The Sony Cybershot DSC HX1 does not come cheap, but it does offer a full range of features and competes with lower priced Digital SLR cameras.
